The Bodleian Libraries’ Portrait Collection: A Samuel H. Kress Foundation Digitization Project

Portraits from the Bodleian Libraries, digitized with the help of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation.

The Bodleian holds a large collection of portraits, including easel paintings, sculptured works, drawings, photographs, and prints. In 2012, many of these were digitized and made available via the BBC’s Your Paintings website, which in 2016 became Art UK. The Samuel H. Kress Foundation has since funded a project to update the descriptions of the Bodleian’s portrait collection. In 2019, the portraits, with updated descriptions and 200 newly-digitized images were added to Digital Bodleian.
