The Visitation [opens new window]

XYL-10 The Visitation (Schr. 60); Madonna and Child (Schr. 1067); Madonna and Child in a Glory (Schr. 1082); St Catherine of Alexandria (Schr.1335) ; Monstrance (Schr. 1941)
[Germany (Augsburg?), c.1485-90]. Woodcut.

These five woodcuts belong to a larger set, made c.1490, which were mostly used for the illustration of calendars.

The oblong paper strip on which the five woodcuts are printed side by side, in the order as listed above, is a cut-out from a larger sheet. The arrangement of the images, side by side to form a strip, corresponds exactly to that attested in the large-format typographic broadside calendars made by late fifteenth-century Augsburg printers.
